We Are Islands, a collaborative collage film inspired by Blaze Island, is released as part of the CBC’s Digital Originals Showcase: “Looking for a dreamy bite-sized love story to dive into during the second pandemic wave? Author Catherine Bush has just released a new collage-based experimental film set on Fogo Island. There are no spoken words in the film, We Are Islands, and the “script” was taken entirely from the pages of her recently released book, Blaze Island. The story is about a “renegade scientist” father and daughter coping after a major storm and also has to do with climate change.” We Are Islands is a collaborative collage film, created by acclaimed experimental filmmaker Mike Hoolboom, with images from Fogo Island-based photographer Paddy Barry and artist M’Liz Keefe. It was funded through the Canada Council’s Digital Originals program for online art created during the pandemic and selected for the CBC’s Digital Originals Showcase. “Fairy tales are almost always the stories of the powerless, of youngest sons, abandoned children, orphans.... Fairy tales are children's stories not in who they were made for but in their focus on the early stages of life, when others have power over you and you have power over no one.”
