The Jugglers

02_Devillers-Carole_Boys-juggling-at-sunsetThis moody, mysterious image returns me to the world of my last novel, Accusation, and the children’s circus within it and within the circus the child jugglers and flame throwers. For weeks every time I’ve heard a jetliner creaking in the sky, I’ve thought of the soundtrack of Mike Hoolboom’s beautiful book trailer, made for the book’s launch, which opens with an airplane’s call and uses silhouettes to gesture, as the novel does, towards all that we can’t know about others.

“Fairy tales are almost always the stories of the powerless, of youngest sons, abandoned children, orphans.... Fairy tales are children's stories not in who they were made for but in their focus on the early stages of life, when others have power over you and you have power over no one.”
